Professor Dr. P. Muthusamy

Prof Muthusamy Palanisamy is an ophthalmologist with special interest in Intra-Ocular Lens Implant, Cornea and Pterygium.

He graduated in medicine (M.B.B.S) in 1970 from Tanjore Medical College (affiliated to Madras University), Tamil Nadu, India.

He did his training in ophthalmology in the Eye Department of Kuala Lumpur General Hospital, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and the Princess Alexandria Eye Pavilion (Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh) in United Kingdom.

He received the Diploma in Ophthalmology from Royal College Physician of London and the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1977. He was admitted as a Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1978. In 1989, he was admitted without examination as a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologist. He was admitted as a member of the Academy of Medicine Malaysia in 1991.

He practices ophthalmology at the Muthu Eye Clinic & Surgery in Kota Kinabalu Specialist Centre, Sabah, Malaysia.

He is a co-ordinator for the International Basic Science Assessment for Ophthalmologists conducted by the International Council of Ophthalmology.

He is an Adjunct Professor in the Medical School of the University Malaysia Sabah.

Dr. Muthusamy is also member of:

• Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ophthalmologist
• Member of Academy of Medicine Malaysia
• Life Member of Malaysian Medical Association
• Member of the Ophthalmology Society of the Malaysian Medical Association
• Life member of the Sabah Society for the Blind.

• Member of the Lions Club of Kota Kinabalu (Host) (Monarch Lion).

Muthusamy Medal

The Muthusamy Gold Medal for the most outstanding candidate in the final Fellowship Examination in Ophthalmology conducted by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in each Academic year was established in 1982. The Muthusamy Medal is Awarded to the most outstanding candidate in the Final(Section B and C) FRCSEd (Ophthalmology) Examination of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

The medal is given is Awarded to the most outstanding candidate only when the candidate reaches a standard of excellence stipulated by the committee. The medal was not awarded during the year 1988/89 because the most outstanding candidate did not reach the stipulated standard.

There is a change in the system of examination.

From 2004, the medal will be warded to the most outstanding candidate in the Final MRCSEd (Ophthalmology) examination.

Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh Medal

Professor Muthusamy has been awarded the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh Medal for his contribution to the College in the field of Ophthalmology. He is the first Asian ophthalmologist to receive the award of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh Medal.

Award from the Mayer of Seoul Metropolitan Government

In 1990, he received an award from the Mayer of Seoul Metropolitan Government, in recognition of his service to the needy eye patients in South Korea.

Justice of the Peace

He was appointed as Justice of the Peace in the State of Sabah in 1990..

Datuk

He was made a Datuk in 1999. This is based on the legacy left behind by the British Raj and is equivalent to "Sir" appointed by the Queen.
